Declaration of being Jewish

Paper Trail of Exclusion – Netherlands 1940s

A rare and historically significant document set relating to the registration and classification of Jewish individuals during the German occupation of the Netherlands.

This lot consists of a “Verklaring Jood te zijn” (declaration of being Jewish), accompanied by a registration slip and a printed regulation defining the legal concept of “Jew” (Verordening over het begrip Jood).

Such documents formed part of the bureaucratic framework used to identify, register, and ultimately isolate Jewish citizens — a chilling example of how administrative systems were employed in the early stages of persecution.

Original paper material of this nature is exceptionally scarce, as many documents were lost, destroyed, or discarded after the war. Surviving examples offer a direct and tangible link to this period.

A sobering yet important historical artifact for collectors of WWII documents, occupation-era administration, or Holocaust-related material.
