Voices Behind Barbed Wire: 1944 Issue

A rare and historically significant wartime publication: “Luister eens uit”, 1st year, issue no. 3/4, dated March 1944.

This monthly magazine was produced for Dutch non-commissioned officers held as prisoners of war in the camp at Kobierzyn, near Kraków in occupied Poland.

The camp, designated as Stalag 369, functioned as a penal facility for Dutch prisoners who had refused compliance. Conditions were known to be harsh, and the camp also held French and Belgian NCOs. It operated for a relatively short period, from October 1943 until July 1944.

Publications of this kind were produced in very limited numbers under difficult circumstances, making surviving examples exceptionally scarce. They offer a rare insight into daily life, communication, and morale among prisoners in a punitive camp environment.

A compelling and uncommon piece of WWII prisoner-of-war history.
