NSB Prinsenvlag “Groep v. Berkel”

The Flag Before the Flag: NSB Ritual Use

Original Dutch National Socialist Movement (NSB) “Prinsenvlag” (Prince’s Flag), used during the wartime period.

This example shows clear signs of use and carries a handwritten inscription on the upper white border near the hoist: “Groep v. Berkel”, applied in indelible purple pencil. Such markings strongly suggest group ownership and practical deployment, most likely within the context of the NSB youth organization (Jeugdstorm).

Constructed from thin cotton, the flag exhibits age-related characteristics, including moisture staining visible on the central white band. These traces of use add to its authenticity as a field-used object rather than a preserved ceremonial piece.

Within the NSB, the Prince’s Flag held primary symbolic importance, even surpassing the well-known black-red NSB flag. During official gatherings, the national flag was traditionally carried in first, followed by the NSB flag — underscoring its ideological significance.

Variants of this flag were also produced in more luxurious moiré fabric; this example represents the more commonly used, utilitarian version.
