Aufruf Rauter Jordaan
Amsterdam, 1941
The population of Amsterdam reacted strongly to the brutal measures taken by the Germans following bloody riots in the Jordaan. A large strike broke out in Amsterdam and northern Netherlands but was suppressed after harsh actions by the German authorities. Nevertheless, resistance continued to smolder in some places, prompting Rauter to distribute this poster.
In this AUFRUF (appeal), he mentioned that resistance still persisted, instigated by "Jewish (!) and communist elements." (Not referred to as "persons," but "elements.") He warned of severe consequences.
Usually, a BEKANNTMACHUNG (public notice) appeared in both Dutch and German (later reversed), but in this case, he opted for an AUFRUF. A Dutch version of this poster also exists.
A rare and historically significant document!!
