Amt für Volkswohlfahrt – Ortsgruppe Gouda

An absolutely original and exceptionally well-preserved enamel sign from the German occupation of the Netherlands, reading:

AMT FÜR VOLKSWOHLFAHRT
ORTSGRUPPE GOUDA

A substantial and unusually heavy piece, manufactured from a steel plate with a thick layer of enamel. Measuring approximately 18 × 49.5 cm and weighing more than 1 kilogram, this is a serious original piece rather than a lightweight reproduction or later decorative item.

The Amt für Volkswohlfahrt (Office for Public Welfare) was the NSDAP organisation responsible for social welfare activities within the Nazi system. This sign specifically identifies the local Ortsgruppe Gouda, giving it a direct and highly localised connection to the wartime occupation of the Netherlands.

The enamel remains in top condition, with only minimal damage to the two lower corners and light traces where screws were previously mounted. Considering the age, size and original use of the sign, its overall condition is remarkable.

A particularly striking and difficult-to-find piece of original occupation-era Dutch material — the combination of heavy enamel construction, large format and the specific Gouda Ortsgruppe makes this a very unusual survivor.
