Last in Line, Literally.

The Dutch SS (Nederlandsche SS) marched past Mussert as the final formation of the entire parade. This is a particularly interesting detail. The Dutch SS was not an organization created by Mussert's NSB itself, but developed under German SS influence, and its position within the NSB was a complicated and often uneasy one.

Having the Dutch SS march as the very last formation can therefore be seen as more than just a detail of parade organization. It reflects the complicated relationship between the NSB and the Dutch SS, which was never simply an integral creation of the NSB. In that sense, the photograph captures an interesting visual indication of the position the Dutch SS occupied within the movement.
